ICAMES 2009 – May 13th

Day 4 – Journey to Asia

  • Breakfast at hotel
  • Went to campus
  • Had a seminar by Paul Doany, CEO, Turk Telecom on technology and entrepreneurship
  • It was more on his experiences in making the correct decision and also suggested that not always the intellectually sexy ideas succeed.
  • He also talked about some of the VAS services and other application they are working on at Turk Telecom.
  • Spent some time on the campus green
  • Went on a picnic to the Asian side of Istanbul
  • BBQ/Lunch
  • Loads of fruits, deserts, Ice Cream and some sleep under the shades
  • Some guys played the Beer Dice Game
  • Came back to campus and then to hotel and had the usual dinner (the sandwich)
  • Went to Bowling, which was fun and entertaining
  • Ramanan was the winner with 146 points though this was his first time playing (Nimal got 78)
  • Back to hotel a little earlier than the other days

ICAMES 2009 – May 12th

Day 3 – Presentations Day 2

  • Managed to getup a little early and had breakfast at hotel
  • Went to university for the second day presentations
  • Presentation by Macedonia
  • Presentation by Bulgaria
  • Tried some Turkish Coffee during the break, it was good, and the fortune telling was interesting/funny :)
  • Presentation by WMU, USA
  • Presentation by Russia
  • Pasta Pizza Party
  • After a great lunch slept while some of the presentations :)
  • Presentation by Spain
  • Presentation by Solvenia
  • Presentation by Crotia
  • Roaming around campus till 4
  • Back to Hotel, had to take all stuff for the Cultural Night
  • Came back to campus with Can, but forgot the food parcels near the room door, so Shayanthan had to go back to hotel with Can to get the stuff again
  • Cultural Night started at around 7
  • One of the best days at ICAMES, had great fun, great food and drinks and it was a great chance to learn and share our cultures and lifestyles.
  • Some of us wore cultural dresses, including Ramanan on a traditional Vaeshtti and Nimal on a Sri Lankan Sarong
  • Tried a lot of Turkish food and other food items from other countries and collected some souvenirs too
  • Some got overloaded with the Turkish Raki
  • Many of the participants showed interest in Sri Lankan foods (though some of our items were too hot for them), and also they were impressed with the funny dance Nimal did during the Cultural Presentation
  • This was a great night with fun and friendship
  • Came back to hotel after midnight, almost exhausted

ICAMES 2009 – May 11th

Day 2 – Presentations Day 1

  • Get up late at 8.00 and had to skip breakfast
  • Went to university at around 9
  • Presentations started from 9.30
  • Presentation by METU, Turkey
  • Presentation by Boğaziçi University, Turkey
  • Presentation by Purdue University, USA
  • Presentation by University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka (yeah… our presentation was at 11.15)
  • Though we thought we were not well prepared, most of the audience response was it was good and had a chance to chat with some of them who were impressed by the concept.
  • Lunch on rooftop
  • The building where the presentation were held (Perkins Hall) had a beautiful rooftop view of the Bosphorous.
  • Some more presentations in the afternoon
  • Presentation by Italy
  • Presentation by Sabanci University, Turkey
  • Presentation by Latviya
  • Presentation by Greece
  • Finish at 3
  • Walked around the campus with Can and few of his friends
  • Went to ENSO room and found out that these was another group from UoM who have took part in ICAMES 2007
  • Ate alot at a campus cafeteria
  • Played some handball (or whatever with a ball in hand) on the green
  • Back to hotel
  • Had dinner at hotel (though its a little boring with the same sandwich all the time…)
  • Some free time to rest (or to check mail and post some updates on Facebook and Twitter… :) )
  • Went to Hookah Party (Waterpipe Night)
  • Back to hotel around midnight

ICAMES 2009 – May 10th – Istanbul Sightseeing & Opening Cocktail

Day 1

  • Breakfast at Hotel
  • Visit Dolmabahçe Palace
  • Spent half day inside the one of the largest and grand palace in Turkey
  • Lunch on the move
  • Visit Miniatürk Miniature Park
  • Its a great way to see a snapshot of the whole Turkey in one place
  • Goknur Topcu joined us after
  • Visit Rahmi M. Koç Museum
  • Its a private industrial museum in Istanbul, Turkey dedicated to history of transport, industry and communications
  • Ate some and had coffee at the museum cafeteria
  • Back to hotel and had some free time
  • Dinner at Boğaziçi University South Campus
  • Official Opening Ceremony and Cocktail
  • Back to hotel and prepared for our presentation next morning

ICAMES 2009 – May 8th – Flying to the Timeless City

Day (0-1)

Colombo:

  • 12.15AM – Check in at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) was easy with Emirates Online Check-in, also we can get the seats as we wanted
  • 01.00AM – Felt kinda hungry while waiting for boarding, so had a $1 Burger at BIA
  • 03.00AM – Boarding, Helped another Tamil guy who was going to Doha
  • 03.30AM – Take-off from Colombo, The ICE Entertainment system was nice and had few Tamil and Hindi movies and also some good collection of music
  • 04.00AM – With Special Online Order, we got special Breakfast (served earlier too) including the Hindu Meal for Ramanan. The food on Emirates was good as expected
  • 04.00AM – Slept for sometime and watched a movie.

Dubai:

  • 06.00AM – Landed in Dubai International Airport
  • 06.30AM – Walked around Dubai Duty Free
  • 07.00AM – Helped the Sri Lankan guy going to Doha, whom we met at Colombo airport, to find his boarding gate
  • 07.30AM – Breakfast at Starbucks :)
  • 08.30AM – Slept for a while near our Boarding Gate Area
  • 10.30AM – Boarding
  • 12.00PM  – Take-off from Dubai
  • 12.30PM – Special Lunch (again), the Oriental lunch on Emirates was good
  • 01.30PM – On flight drinks, but just soft drinks only

Istanbul:

  • 03.00PM – Landed in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport
  • 03.45PM – Finish immigration
  • 05.00PM – Wait till the group from Michigan to arrive
  • 07.00PM – Arrived at Hotel, but we didn’t have a room there, so went to a university dorm
  • 08.30PM – Went to for dinner with our ICAMES guide, Can Üzüm
  • 09.30PM – Dinner at KFC in a mall
  • 11.00PM – Had Cappuccino at Bebek Starbucks with few other ICAMES groups
  • 12.00AM – Came back to room

To the Timeless City for ICAMES 2009

We will be in the Timeless City Istanbul, Turkey for week from May 9th to May 16th to present our project at ICAMES’ 2009. We will keep more daily updated on our project activities posted on this blog from there.

This will not just only be a acadamic conference, but will also include many more activities including parties, sightseeing, etc. So we shall post photos and videos of those also here in this blog.

Project eID selected to ICAMES 2009

We are pleased to inform that we have been selected to attend ICAMES 2009 (International Cultural and Academic Meeting of Engineering Students) and present our project “Project eID”, which will be held on May 9-15, 2009 at Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Final Project Demonstration and Vivas

We have successfully completed our final project demonstration and vivas today. Initially our demonstration we scheduled forMarch 27, but we had to postpone this due to a last mintue problem, when we got our smart cards locked.

Today’s demonstration were possitive and we were able to show in real terms that our project “could work”.

Meeting with Project Supervisor (16-03-2009)

We had a meeting with our project supervisor Dr.Chandana Gamage today from 3pm to 4pm to discuss about the finalizing of the project and project presentations and demonstrations.

We mainly discussed about the project presentation that is due on the 25th of March and the demonstrations on the 26th of March.  We decided to do the presentation as the group as we could have different components presented by different persons. We are also having another finalizing discussing on the next Monday, the 23rd March.

We also discussed about publishing the research papers. As we already have two papers, which might need some more reviewing, we decided to do that at the earliest we can we have identified some conferenced to which we can submit. We have also decided to go for the third paper titled, “A SOA based eID System”, which we plan to complete in April.

We hope to have all the project work completed by this week so we can get ready for the presentation by the weekend.
